Purée half of the soup so that some of the potatoes get puréed to give the soup body, and there are still whole chunks of potatoes for texture. Add carrots, celery, onion, and white beans and cook until softened. Mash up some of the beans to thicken the soup, then stir in diced ham. To make this Ham and Bean Soup recipe even quicker, substitute cubed cooked ham for the ham hocks and canned beans for the dry beans. Either method you choose, you'll be left with an easy Ham and Bean Soup that's the perfect partner for a slice of cornbread. This soup is one of my longtime favorites, mostly because it is made with wonderfully flavorful homemade ham broth (my favorite!), and it is a breeze to throw together.
